Three years ago, one of the truest statements about the Linux kernel was it's a lonely place to be without a map. In the time that has transpired since then, I like to think I offered all who visit this site that map, or at least someone to walk you through it. The words of praise I've received for my work with the kernel seeds have proved to me that whether it was the map or me walking beside my users, the kernel seed was a good idea; an idea whose time was apparently just a bit overdue.
I expected that people would find the use of the kernel seed just that much easier than trying to start out from make defconfig. What I didn't expect was that the site would become so popular, and so well liked by so many, that I would end the first three years of the kernel seed project having not only the main site, currently floating around the State of Texas, but four mirrors across the US, and Europe.
All of that was unexpected, but also too wonderful for words. For one who has made many attempts at getting a business going, to have one take root and grow in a completely novel way is a vindication that doing what one loves is a way to success. It hasn't made me rich, but success is at times measured in terms other than a monetary bottom line.
The success of kernel seeds also proved to me that at times, it's better to be brave and a little crazy than it is to know everything in the world there is to know about one's chosen topic. Considering the speed at which current computer technology changes, and the amount of different kernel sources and patch sets that exist, I sometimes think even Linus Torvalds gets overwhelmed with it all.
Through it all, the kernel seed remains what it started out being; a configuration file where all of the tough stuff has already been done. And, while at times, there is a bit of debate about what should and shouldn't be included in the kernel seed, no one debates that the kernel seed is a good way to get your Linux machine up and running in the most stable fashion possible.
My philosophy on the seeds remains the same as when I first started. The kernel seed is THE way to get your computer up and running quickly, with as much of what you need as possible, and none of what you don't.
While the settings of the seeds have evolved from the first seed I offered to another Linux user, they remain tweaked with all the basic settings I use on my personal machines. When you use one of Pappy's Kernel Seeds, you're using my system settings. Since it remains obvious that my systems are working well enough to do what it takes to keep this web page set up, those settings will work for every x86 and x86_64 system. Since I continue to set my systems for speed and stability, you will still get both from Pappy's kernel seeds.
I continue to be my best user. The basic settings that come with the kernel seed continue to run all of my Linux machines. Yes, from the laptop I'm using to edit this document, to the server that puts it out to the public, to the x86_64 kernel source configuration machine, and my newest x86_64 system, all my machines are running kernel seeds. I wouldn't have it any other way.
So, what's to come in the next three years? A lot, if I have anything to say about it. Whether you're a Slackware junkie, a Debian nut, a Gentoo freak, or any other serious Linux user that can use the standard vanilla kernel source code from kernel.org, you can rest assured that as long as I keep breathing, the kernel seed will continue to light the way through the darkness of configuring the Linux kernel. As always...
